The tea party movement is dead. The one I was familiar with anyway. Judson Phillips held it down and Sarah Palin drove a stake right through its heart live last night on C-Span in front of an unsuspecting audience.

Sarah Palin didn’t give a tea party speech last night. She gave a partisan Republican address. It was a purely political speech designed to position her for a presidential run in 2012 or 2016. Period. She wasn’t there to celebrate the organic nature of a movement she had nothing to do with creating. She was there to co-opt the name and claim the brand as hers. And she did.

The movement, that came to be officially recognized almost a year ago but whose roots go back further than that, has been snuffed out and replaced in the public mind. The movement that began as a people’s movement of angry independent, libertarians and conservatives will now be thought as the movement of people like Palin, Dick Armey, Judson Phillips, Mark Skoda, etc. Essentially, a wholly owned subsidiary of the “Official Conservative Movement” and the Republican Party.

I hope Tea Parties in other areas stay away from national name speakers and let ordinary people take the stage. To me that was the beauty of the Tea Party Movement, hearing what just ordinary individuals had to say.

The Republican Party didn't have anything to do with the Tea Party Movement, although most of us support it and think it's great for the people to get out there, tell it like it is and speak out about what's on their minds.

They don't need Sarah Palin or any other "big name" to speak for them at $350 a voice. They should speak for themselves for free.

I still don't get the "outrage" with regards to use of the phrase. Granted there is probably more elegant ways to communicate then using the phrase, I didn't see it used in any of the ways that are presently conveyed. He didn't call any individual "retarded" and I understood the use of it to be with regards to the actions or plans of the liberal activists.

Was not the activists goal to slow down and/or delay the progress of the bill? Again I think there is a much better way to convey this statement, but I'm not outraged by the use of the phrase or thought it disparaging towards people with developmental disabilities.
